Personal protective equipment like face masks and gloves became the new standard during the coronavirus pandemic. But if it depended on Anthony Fauci, MD, White House adviser and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, there would be one more item on the list: safety glasses.

Dr Fauci shared this updated information last week in an interview with ABC News Chief Medical Correspondent Jennifer Ashton, MD, on Instagram Live. He told Ashton that the best way to protect yourself against the coronavirus is to protect all mucous surfaces, that is, wet tissues, which include the nose, mouth and eyes. As a result, he recommends people wear glasses or eye masks in public – and he’s not the only expert to suggest the addition of PPE.

A recent study published in The Lancet found that people are nearly three times more likely to contract COVID-19 without eye protection than with them. Infectious disease expert Amesh A. Adalja, MD, also previously said Health that there are case reports of people contracting the virus due to a lack of eye protection.

Of course, most of us don’t want to wear the thick glasses of our middle science class in public. Fortunately, Amazon has the perfect alternative: the Magid Y50 Design Series safety glasses ($ 10, was $ 12; amazon.com). Unique safety glasses merge eyewear protection with the sleek design of retro frames for a pair that you will have no problem wearing in public.

They are constructed with a lightweight frame and square lenses covered with a sturdy protective coating. Both scratch and fog resistant, the goggles are designed for comfort and safety with soft temple pads and additional clear guards attached to the outer edges of the ear cups. Also available with bifocal magnification or blue light blocking lenses, the sleek styling even comes with a fabric carrying pouch.

Already preferred by medical workers in dialysis clinics and construction workers on job sites, safety glasses have over 1,000 perfect 5-star reviews on Amazon. Critics say they get compliments for wearing the glasses and like that they have impact protection without the need for traditional safety glasses that often distort their vision or press painfully against their temples.

Best of all, trendy safety glasses are actually very affordable. A single pair costs just $ 10, or you can buy a two-pack with tinted black lenses and clear lenses for just $ 17. Needless to say, the retro style will be the most stylish addition to your PPE line to date and you will be proud of Dr. Fauci.
