A wide range of projects around the house require proper safety glasses to help protect my eyes from various dangers that could otherwise irritate or cause lasting damage. I have a selection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), but finding suitable safety glasses has always been a problem as previous pairs scratched too easily or misted up when in use, obscuring my vision.

I thought I was going to experience the same with the 3M Virtua CCS Safety Glasses (available on Amazon), but I was pleasantly surprised by a host of innovative features and a comfortable fit that properly protected my eyes while still allowing me to see clearly. I have since used these safety glasses to drill, cut, sand, grind, hammer, and even repair my computer, although the latter instance was less for protection and more to take advantage of the built-in diopters to better see the tiny screw with it. which I was working on.

Verdict: Due to the comfortable fit, scratch-resistant lenses and full peripheral protection, 3M Virtua CCS Safety Glasses rank # 1 among the competition.

Lightweight, but surprisingly durable

3M Virtua CCS Safety Glasses have thin, flexible temples that stretch just behind the ears, sitting comfortably like a pair of prescription glasses. But unlike my prescription glasses, I was able to bend, twist and drop these ANSI and CSA certified safety glasses on the floor without damaging the frame or lenses. Part of this durability is due to the flexible and lightweight design which tends to bounce off the floor or workbench if dropped, but it’s also a function of the scratch-resistant polycarbonate lenses.

I found it hard to believe that these lightweight safety glasses could actually withstand this damage, attributing the pristine condition to a short drop distance, so I put them on my workbench and knocked the glasses straight out a few times. without making a mark. However, I have also found that the glasses do not hold well around a flame, which makes them a potential hazard when using a torch.

Versatility reigns supreme

While the durability of 3M safety glasses really impressed me, the range of features really made these glasses stand out from various inferior options. One of the first features I noticed is the removable foam gasket that attaches securely to the inside of the glasses. When the peripheral protective gasket is attached, the safety glasses fit my face perfectly, ensuring that dust, dirt and wood chips could not fly under the anti-fog lenses to come into contact with my eyes. This feature was especially important for drilling guide holes in wall studs, making precise cuts on a carpentry project, using an electric sander to smooth wood, and cutting metal pipe with my grinder.

Other impressive features include wired earplug clips in the temples of the safety glasses and built-in reading diopters located in the lenses, making it easier for me to read small instructions without removing the glasses. Unfortunately, the diopters sometimes got in the way, blurring my vision until I slightly adjusted my head position or where I was looking.

Although these safety glasses protect against UV rays, I have always had problems using them outdoors due to sunlight and glare from reflective light. Ideally, this product would be offered with polarized lenses, although this may impact the ability of the diopters.

A good deal for any handyman

Safety glasses aren’t known to be one of the more expensive PPE, but depending on the brand, there’s a good chance I could spend over $ 50 on a high-quality pair just to make sure that I properly protect my eyes when working with a saw, hammer, drill or any other tool. However, 3M Virtua CCS Safety Glasses come at a more than reasonable price point, especially considering the durability, comfort, and range of features built into these glasses.

I was able to purchase a pair of these 3M safety glasses on Amazon for just $ 15.43. At the time, I thought the price was representative of the product, cheap enough that I could easily replace the first pair when it wears out. Since the time of purchase, I have used these glasses in maintenance and DIY projects around the house and have even subjected the glasses to direct impact testing without scratching. Considering these results, the price of $ 15 seems almost too low for these durable glasses.

How we reviewed 3M safety glasses

I spent around 10 years working as a project manager which included a significant amount of safety training, regular inspections and regulations that my workers and I had to follow before even entering a job site. One of my responsibilities was to find safety equipment, such as confined space equipment, signage, protective gloves, earplugs and safety glasses to ensure that my workers and I could perform tasks in a safe and efficient manner.

To test this pair of safety glasses, I used them to do several tasks including chopping wood with a jigsaw and circular saw, running an electric sander, drilling guide holes through 2x4s, cutting a pipe with a grinder and use a torch to weld a plumbing joint. Throughout these tasks, I noted the anti-scratch and anti-fog qualities of the lenses, and even attempted to simulate a tool or flying object by hitting the lenses repeatedly while the glasses were on. on the workbench.

The foam gasket around my eyes ensured that sawdust, wood chips, sparks and other flying debris could not reach my eyes from the top, sides or bottom of the glasses. I also tested the more subjective qualities of safety glasses, such as comfort, fit, clarity of vision, and resistance to sunlight. With a few minor exceptions, including non-polarized lenses, potential for visual blurring from diopters, and vulnerability to flames, these 3M Virtua CCS safety glasses performed admirably in all tests.

Should You Choose 3M Safety Glasses?

Safety glasses are a necessity for any DIY enthusiast. It’s even a good idea for people who don’t do a lot of home renovations or maintenance due to the many different circumstances in which wearing a pair of safety glasses could prevent lasting damage or impairment. visual. For example, I’ve found that whether I’m cleaning the grill, hanging a photo on the wall, or just mowing the lawn, it’s a good idea to have a pair of safety glasses to protect my eyes, since they are among the most vulnerable parts of the human body.

These 3M safety glasses are suitable for a variety of tasks. Due to their small size and lightweight frames, I found that I could wear these glasses comfortably for hours without a problem. For basic tasks around the house, like fixing a drawer or tightening the hinges of a closet, I could wear the glasses without the foam gasket, which made them more breathable on my eyes. I could then put the gasket back in place to take on more complex tasks, like cutting pieces of wood and sanding surfaces, knowing that the full perimeter protection would protect my eyes from dust and debris.

However, I would recommend anyone who wants safety glasses for primarily outdoor work to consider a different pair. While anti-fog lenses could protect against 99% of UV rays, they haven’t done much to reduce reflective light from the sun. I also noticed that the foam gasket begins to melt near a flame, indicating that continued use could have melted the gasket completely. As a result, this product is not the best choice for hot work.

Comfort, versatility and effective protection

3M Virtua CCS safety glasses are lightweight, with narrow temples and integrated earplug holders that take user comfort seriously. This versatile product includes a range of different features designed to make jobs easier without having to stop multiple times to adjust or completely change your pair of safety glasses, depending on the job.

The safety glasses are loose or tight against the face with the removable foam gasket, protecting my eyes from peripheral damage such as flying dust, wood chips and other debris. They also have reading diopters in the lenses, so I can easily switch from a precise cut in a piece of wood to reading small instructions or recorded measurements. Apart from these additional features, the lenses are also scratch and UV resistant, protecting my eyes up to 99% from UV rays.
